The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) published its report into "Child Protection Within Religious Organisations and Settings" on 2nd September 2021. The Methodist Church was among 38 contributors into the investigation.
The Methodist Church was cited as an example of an organisation with more comprehensive safer recruitment arrangements in place, and a "rare" example of an organisation with positive internal quality assurance processes, referring to the Past Cases Review.
However, they did note that within the Past Cases Review there was evidence that ministers found it difficult to recognise and accept that abuse had taken place when the perpetrator was a colleague.
Detailed information from the statements regarding the Methodist Church's views on DBS checks and systems of oversight are set out in the table at Page 195 of the report, and the response from the Methodist Church can now be found online
